The dot SE country-specific top-level domain extension was established in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was very restrictive, so a very low number of domains were grabbed. Individuals were allowed to obtain no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was required, i.e. merely Swedish persons, businesses and organizations could buy a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, consequently, the number of dot SE domains has been increasing each year.

At present, anybody can book a .SE name, which allows you to reach the Swedish online community even if you do not have a local presence.
